About the sites
The West Cumbria Sites Stakeholder Group oversees and scrutinises all the nuclear licensed sites in the West Cumbria area. There are currently three nuclear licensed sites represented on the WCSSG those being, Sellafield Ltd, the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) and Studsvik metal recycling facility. Sellafield Ltd and LLWR are owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
About us
The WCSSG was originally formed to replace the Sellafield Local Liaison Committee (SLLC). The change reflected the fact that there were several nuclear licensed sites in the area and was intended to emphasise the importance of engagement with the community, encouraging input in discussions and consultations from all stakeholders. The organisation and ownership of sites has since changed and the WCSSG has changed to correspond, with re-organisation of its sub-committees, but the aim remains the same.

Key projects
The Sellafield site comprises a range of nuclear facilities, including redundant facilities associated with defence work, facilities associated with the Magnox reprocessing programme, the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant, the Sellafield Mox plant, a range of waste treatment plants and the Calder Hall power station, which ceased operations in 2003.

UK Waste Treatment Project Experience
LLW Repository
LLWR is the UK’s only dedicated facility for the disposal of low level radioactive waste and has operated safely since 1959.  Low level waste (LLW) mainly arises from the nuclear industry, power generation, and decommissioning activities, but it is also created by research, healthcare, defence and the oil and gas industries.  LLW is typically comprised of materials used in a radioactive operating environment such as paper, cardboard, plastic, protective clothing, soil, rubble and metal.  The waste is containerised for transport to the site by either rail or road.  Wherever possible, LLW is treated and/or compacted to reduce the final disposal volume and upon arrival at LLWR, the containers are grouted prior to emplacement in engineered concrete vaults.
National Stakeholder Group Chairman's Forum
The National Stakeholder Group Chairmen's Forum had its first meeting on 21st November 2007. Items on the agenda included the terms of reference for the group, harmonisation of all Site Stakeholder Groups and current issues which are affecting all groups, such as funding and new build proposals. At the first meeting, David Moore, Chairman of the WCSSG was elected as Chairman of this forum and Richard Smith, Chairman of Sizewell 'A' and 'B' stakeholder Group was voted in as the Vice Chairman of the forum.
Decommissioning sub-committee
The Decommissioning sub-committee provides a forum for members of the committee to scrutinise the decommissioning activities/progress of the Site Licence Companies and the NDA’s decommissioning strategies.
LLW Repository sub-committee
The Low Level Waste Repository Sub-Committee considers all aspects of the repository site at Drigg.
Socio-economic sub-committee
The Socio-economic sub-committee provides a forum for the members of the committee to scrutinise the socio-economic implications of the NDA and Site Licence Companies’ activities. It also gives the opportunity to scrutinise the socio economic proposals of Nuclear Management Partners, the Parent Body Organisation for Sellafield Ltd.
