West Cumbria Sites Stakeholder Group

Description of the Sellafield site Description of the Calder Hall site Description of the UKAEA site Description of the LLWR site at Drigg

The WCSSG was originally formed to replace the Sellafield Local Liaison Committee (SLLC). The change reflected the fact that there were four nuclear licensed sites in the area and was intended to emphasise the importance of engagement with the community, encouraging input in discussions and consultations from all stakeholders. The organisation and ownership of sites has since changed and the WCSSG is changing to correspond, with re-organisation of its sub-committees, but the aim remains the same.

Request for Comments on CoRWM Reports

Attached are two draft CoRWM reports on which we would very much like your comments. One is a full draft of CoRWM's March 2009 report to Government on Interim Storage of Higher Activity Wastes and Management of Spent Fuels, Plutonium and Uranium (CoRWM document 2500, dated 2 February 2009). The other is a first draft of their report on R&D for these topics (CoRWM document 2389, dated 2 February 2009). The second report feeds into the first and will also be the basis of CoRWM's main report to Government on R&D, due in June 2009, which will include sections on R&D for geological disposal.

CoRWM welcomes your comments on any parts of the reports but would particularly like your views on the conclusions and proposed recommendations. The deadline for comments is 2 March 2009, and there are response forms attached for you to use if you wish.

Plutonium Strategy Development - Stakeholder Update

Further to the workshop held on 28th October 2008 which looked at Plutonium Disposition Options, the NDA intends to carry out informal updates at least quarterly to let stakeholders know what is going on behind the scenes.

The NDA has formally sent the full credible options paper to Government and is anticipating a response from Government by the end of March. The credible options paper is available on their website, also available is a topic strategy paper, which is a live document that will be updated regularly as things change. To access these documents, please use the following links.

Future Engagement

At the workshops held before Christmas one of the issues raised was a lack of opportunity over the last 18 months for face to face engagement. In order to address this the NDA is planning a series of seminars on plutonium over the coming year to allow access to NDA staff and provide an opportunity to ask questions. They are currently looking for a venue and date for the first seminar which is likely to be in April.
