"This group makes an important contribution to the county's plans in the unlikely event of a hazardous incident at one of the sites and we regularly assess plans for procedures and suggest possible improvements."

The Emergency Planning Sub-Committee makes an important contribution to the county's plans in the unlikely event of a hazardous incident at Sellafield. Through arrangements to warn and inform the public, such as free booklets, action cards, and a freephone emergency information service, this Sub-Committee informs local residents what to do in an emergency.

It also regularly assesses plans for procedures and suggests possible improvements.

The Committee's remit is to scrutinise the on and off site arrangements to protect the workforce and public in the event of an emergency at Sellafield. These include:

Sellafield On Site Emergency Exercises
Cumbria County Council Off-Site Emergency Plan
Off-Site Multi Agency Emergency Exercises
Arrangements to warn and inform the public.

Current public warning and informing arrangements include:

'What to do in an Emergency' booklets and Action Cards (see below)
Sellafield Emergency Information Line 0808 909 8090 - a freephone dial in phone system which gives emergency information about operations at the Site.
A computerised telephone warning system which automatically warns the public near the site of an emergency
'Cumbria Alert website - www.cumbriaalert.info a website that will be used to issue information in the event of an emergency at Sellafield.
Broadcast of emergency information on local radio.
