Environment Agency consultation
Radioactive Substances Act 1993
Application by Sellafield Limited to: vary their authorisation to dispose of gaseous radioactive waste by discharge to atmosphere; liquid radioactive waste to sea; solid radioactive waste disposal by deposit on the premises and by transfer to other premises.
The Environment Agency is considering an application from Sellafield Limited to vary their Radioactive Substances Act 1993 authorisation. This authorisation permits the disposal of specified radioactive wastes from Sellafield and Windscale nuclear sites, subject to limitations and conditions. We intend to use our powers of variation under Section 17 (2) (b) of RSA93 to revoke the current authorisation BX9838/BX9838 (as varied) and to issue a new authorisation BX9838/CE1369 that consolidates all of the changes.
Copies of Sellafield Limited’s submission, together with a draft Certificate of Authorisation, draft revocation notice and Explanatory Documents, which we have prepared for this public consultation, can be inspected from 7 December 2009 until 8 February 2010 at:

The changes proposed include addition of the following routes:
• transfer low level waste oils to Tradebee at Hythe, Hampshire for incineration; and
• transfer High Volume Very Low Level Waste (HV-VLLW) to the specified landfill (operated by WRG Ltd) at Lillyhall for disposal. This route will not be authorised unless the application by WRG Ltd for a radioactive waste authorisation for the specified landfill is successful.
All comments should be sent as soon as possible, and in any event, to arrive no later than 8 February 2010 to:
